Common Circle Education Sustainable Farming Bike Tour 2011

My wife, son and I joined 12 other bikers in early August for a one week sustainable farming bike tour in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The tour involved biking 40-60 miles one day and then touring/working on an organic farm the next day (MattCyn, Sunbow, and Rivers Turn Farms). Along the way we learned a lot about permaculture principles, sustainable farming practices, and community building. The trip was led by Vladislav Davidzon (founder of Common Circle Education) and HW Brady. I recommend Common Circle Education’s bike tours to anyone interested in combining a self contained bike adventure with an opportunity to learn some things about sustainable farming and permaculture.

Sustainable Office Strikes Gold With Green Apple Award

Morgan Lovell has been awarded the gold Green Apple accolade from the Green Organisation for its pioneering fit out of a sustainable office.

Representatives from Morgan Lovell travelled to the Houses of Parliament to collect the accolade. The company was among only a handful of organisations in the UK to achieve the top honour.

This is the third award in weeks Morgan Lovell has achieved for its pioneering work to create a green office at the company’s own London headquarters, located in Noel Street, Soho.

Developed in the unlikely setting of a 1960s block, the office is in the type of building that would normally be considered an environmental write-off.

The other awards won recently include a highly commended award in the ‘Best Practice In A Fit Out Project’ category, at the British Institute of Facilities Management Investors in FM Excellence awards.

Morgan Lovell also took a highly commended accolade in the Green Business Awards, in the ‘Best Construction or Property Business category.’

Earlier this year, the sustainable workplace achieved the highest BREEAM fit out environmental assessment score to date in the UK, and as a result received an award from the Building Research Establishment (BRE).

David Henderson, managing director of Morgan Lovell, said: “This green office project proves that it is possible to transform an old workplace into a model of sustainability.”

Use fuel stoves instead of fires from emaciated branches or trunks, as these are likely to home small living beings and also create humus necessary for replenishment of soil nutrients. Utilization of stoves has its own confines, though. There have been cases when hazardous use of stoves had set out wildfires destroying the nature.
