The Green Card, Naturalization, and How to Become a Legal Immigrant

The process for a foreign citizen to legally acquire a green card and eventually become a legal naturalized citizen of the U.S. is difficult, time consuming, and expensive. Many critics of the system maintain that if the process was simpler there would be far fewer foreign citizens entering and remaining in the U.S. illegally.

When a foreign citizen visits the U.S. as a tourist, a medical patient, a student, or for business purposes, they generally need to present only a valid national passport, a photo ID card or birth certificate, and sometimes an entry visa. A visa is simply an endorsement on a document that shows authenticity and conveys permission to travel to and to enter a foreign country. This type of visa is also known as a nonimmigrant visa. Fees for a passport, a nonimmigrant visa, and a border crossing card total about $300.

However, when a foreign citizen wishes to reside and work in the U.S., they need to present an immigrant visa, also known as a green card. The green card was originally called the Alien Registration Receipt Card, but it has recently been renamed the Permanent Resident Card. Originally the card was green in color but now the card is white with some green printing on the back. It is still known generally as the green card. Recipients of the green card must carry it with them at all times. The green card is valid for a period of 10 years.

Travel to Buckingham Palace

Popularly known as “Buck House”, has served as the Monarch`s permanent London residence since the accession of Queen Victoria. It began its days in 1702 as the Duke of Buckingham`s city residence, built on the site of a notorious brothel, and was sold by the Duke`s son to George III in 1762. The building was refurbished by Nash in the late 1820s for the Prince Regent, and again by Aston Webb in time for George V`s coronation in 1913. It is the largest private house in London – it has more than 660 rooms.

The Ball Room, which is the largest room in the palace, opened to the public for the first time in 2000. The 19 State Rooms at the palace, which include the Throne Room and the Picture Gallery, house treasures including English and French furniture, paintings by Rembrandt and Rubens and sculpture by Canaletto. Visitors can also see inside the Royal Mews, which is one of the grandest working stables in the world.

The façade of this internationally known palace has not always presented the appearance it does today. It was originally a townhouse built by John Sheffield, the Duke of Buckingham, and a friend of Queen Anne. In 1703 she granted him the land-at the corner of St James’s Park and Green Park-on which the Palace now stands. It was first known as Buckingham House.

Going Green ‘ Why and How

Copyright (c) 2008 Virginia Ginsburg

It seems as if everywhere you go someone is talking about being “green,” but what exactly does being green mean? And why should we do it? Most importantly, how far do we need to go to make an impact?

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
In its simplest definition, being green means taking into account the Earth’s health when making choices about how you live your life. This means considering the ecosystems that support all inhabitants of the planet. In the big picture, being green means making choices based on the impact they will have on our water, land and air resources.

Humans take a large toll on all three of these critical resources – every product that we purchase involves taking resources from the Earth. Take a look at a simple organic apple. Feels pretty virtuous, right? It absolutely is, but keep in mind the requirements of bringing that apple to your table:
1. Energy: the farmer relies on vehicles and machinery that run on electricity to grow and harvest the apple, and the apple must travel in a vehicle to reach your home
2. Water: the farmer must use water to irrigate his fields
3. Air: the farmer’s vehicles and all transport vehicles involved emit carbon dioxide

So you see, even for a very simple, good fruit, we rely on the Earth’s resources. Many more resources are required and drained when producing a non-organic apple, and even more when creating the thousands of products that we rely on each day.
